– It is easier to choose not to drink if parents express disapproval of use.
– It is easier to choose not to drink if teens perceive the actual harm and consequences of alcohol use.
Youth ages 12 -18 in Danvers MA are using alcohol early, frequently, heavily and at rates higher than their peers across the state. This is a community problem that has negative impact on our youth.
To address this issue, DanversCARES has instituted a three-point-plan. The plan is based on research-supported strategies that have proven effective in reducing youth substance use.
1. Reduce Access to Alcohol
- Parents do not provide
- Older siblings and friends do not provide
- Adults monitor or lock up alcohol at home
- Students perceive that alcohol is harmful
- Parents disapprove of use
- Drinking alcohol at social events is not acceptable
- Law enforcement conducts checks on liquor sales
- Police implement Party Patrols, Cops in Shops and Shoulder TAP
- Businesses serve and sell alcohol responsibly
